MOAB Tournament Report

I took the Onyx contact force. I went 4-2, finishing 5th out of 17, equal third. The only players I lost to came 1st and 2nd, and they were both close games (indeed, if Unidrons could go prone, I would have won the second).

I went to MOAB hoping to play some tough opponents and hold my own. Did that in spades, so I'm happy with the result and won't be second guessing my theories as much anymore. All the games were great fun against great people, which is one of the best things about the Infinity Community in Australia - no salty, anal retentive, rules lawyering dickheads trying to see a millimetre of your silhouette like in Warhammer.

This one though I think maybe the Maakrep should have been something different, but what? If you drop the hacker then you need to upgrade the Nexus to a hacker in order to field all the REMs, which doesn't leave you with all that many points. You can sneak in 2 Unidrons, but they aren't very useful. The Maakrep had a good run in engineering deck, but a Malignos may have been equally effective. The Maakrep also did something in frontline, but a Malignos would have been much more useful (indeed, potentially game winning) in that mission. A Malignos would also have been very useful in tic-tac-toe, where two more unidrons would also have been helpful. I never needed all 10 orders on turn 1 (especially as I was almost always going second) so the TO thing wouldn't have been a problem, but Malignos are expensive (and paper thin), so I don't know if it would have been possible to actually run one.

Onto the matches!

Round 1 - Rescue against Merovingian Rapid Response Force 10-1

This table looks amazing but is a bit of nightmare for tournament play. In this mission especially, having the high ground was brutal, as you only needed one TAG on the ground floor to rescue civilians and the rest of my snipers could dominate the board. His list was something like this:

 Rescue
──────────────────────────────────────────────────
GROUP 1
CHASSEUR (Minelayer) Rifle, Light Flamethrower, Antipersonnel Mines / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 20)
 112 Light Shotgun / Pistol, CCW. (0 | 12)

I won the roll and chose to deploy up high. My opponent took first turn. I new he had Duroc, so my flanks were covered with heaps of flamers and a unidron link team. He didn't really have anywhere to land the whole game and both he and Margot died immediately upon arrival. This was a problem throughout MOAB. Indeed, not having terrain on the flanks was perhaps the only thing I could fault about the entire event.

On his first turn his Moblot link ate a missile and basically died, leaving him with few options with which to hurt me. My Sphinx and the Unidron spitfire then casually walked over and flamed/shot his remaining units while securing some civilians. I felt a bit bad afterwards. This was the missions I was dreading the most and I got lucky with the matchup. Everyone else was running TAGs and I feel like my TAG was the weakest.

Round 2 - Biotechvore against Onyx contact force 10-0

Quite hard to hide on this table if you're big and can't fit into buildings. Only one side has high ground.

He was running the Xenodron TAG link and an Overdron, with some filler. No Q-drone or Noctifer. His TAG link had no long range weapons, which I found really weird. Something like the following:

 Biotechvore
──────────────────────────────────────────────────
 MED-TECH OBSIDON MEDCHANOID Combi Rifle, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 23)
 SLAVE DRONE Electric Pulse. (0 | 3)

XEODRON MULTI Rifle, Blitzen / Heavy Pistol. (0.5 | 58)
 XEODRON K1 Combi Rifle, Blitzen / Heavy Pistol. (0.5 | 59)
UMBRA LEGATE Hacker (Hacking Device Plus) Boarding Shotgun, Flash Pulse / Pistol, DA CCW. (0.5 | 43)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────

I again won the lt. roll and elected to deploy second on the high ground. I placed the Rodok team such that everyone was hidden except the ML, who could see the far flank where the Batroid link was likely to advance if they wanted to hit anything and also the other flank in case his overdron deployed there from reserve. I put the Noctifer almost next to him, so that if anyone came to tango they would eat more missile than they thought and then have to deal with a TO camo sniper in cover at range. The Q-drone set up in the tower overlooking everything. My other guys were mostly on the flanks where they could quickly advance out of the virus.

I used a command token to prevent him from using more than one command token per turn, which proved very powerful.

He deployed his Overdron with the Batroids and walked him forward to shoot plasma sniper rounds at my Rodok ML. I was 15+3-3 with B2 against his 17+3-3-3 on B3. I also revealed the Noctifer. I won both ftf rolls and his overdron when splat to unconscious. His doctor bot came over fix him, failed and spent his command token. He shot again, I again won the ftf. Both the bot and the droid went kaboom. He then spent his remaining orders getting out of the virus, which left most of his guys, including the link team, out in the open.

My turn I spent a huge number of orders on the HMG Rodok slowly killing his link team. I managed to put the whole thing down but I didn't have heaps of orders left so a bunch of my stuff died to the virus - 3 structure points and remote presence dies hard. No matter. By the end of turn 2 he had an Imetron left. I got a perfect score. This was a confirmation of my theory that attack units without long-range support weapons and MOD stacks aren't much chop. Maybe if I hadn't denied him command tokens he could have put the team into suppression and been more menacing, but I could have engaged from >24".

Round 3 - Tic-Tac-Toe against Knightly Orders 0-10

Same table as last round. I got the same side of the table with the containers and high ground.

He was running a pretty standard 10-man Knightly orders list. That BS17 HMG is really brutal. You hit a Noctifer in cover on 11s if you have range, with 5 dice! His list was something like this:

Tic-Tac-Toe
──────────────────────────────────────────────────
KNIGHT HOSPITALLER Doctor (MediKit) Combi Rifle / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 37)
KNIGHT HOSPITALLER HMG / Pistol, AP CCW. (2 | 41)
MAGISTER KNIGHT Missile Launcher / Pistol, DA CCW. (2 | 32)
MAGISTER KNIGHT Panzerfaust, Light Shotgun / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 23)
MAGISTER KNIGHT Panzerfaust, Light Shotgun / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 23)
 MACHINIST (Father-Engineer) Combi Rifle, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 15)
PATHFINDER DRONBOT Combi Rifle, Sniffer / Electric Pulse. (0 | 16)
 BULLETEER Heavy Shotgun / Electric Pulse. (0 | 17)
DE FERSEN Lieutenant Spitfire / Pistol, Templar CCW (AP + Shock). (2 | 58)
BROTHER KONSTANTINOS Specialist (Infiltration) Combi Rifle, D-Charges / Assault Pistol, CCW. (0 | 34)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────

I lost by a lot in the end, but this was an extremely close game. I won the roll and chose to deploy second. He chose to go first - best of both worlds! I got a bit greedy with the Noctifer trap and chose to deploy both him and the Q-drone in the tower, which meant that I struggled for range bands. I figured that if they win the initial ftf with the HMG it would basically be game over, because you couldn't move to the buttons without triggering them both. It didn't actually matter when I think about the dice rolls, but it was definitely a bad idea. I should have been more conservative with the Noctifer. The bigger deployment error was the Maakrep, who I stuck in a building so that he could advance safely and supportware the Q-drone, but I should have had him closer to objective so he could guard it from behind a door and score it if necessary.

Turn 1 he advanced with his Hospitaller Link, looked out a muddy window and spent some orders killing both the Q-drone and the Noctifer, who both went all the way to dead so I couldn't heal them with my bot. He spent his other orders pressing a button or two.

I spent my turn killing a ML and panzerfaust Magister with my Rodoks. It took a while and I couldn't quite super jump shot the ML to death because he was behind a far away S1 barricade. He would later win the game for my opponent, sadly. I spent some orders pressing buttons and finished the turn by placing my ML such that he was behind but above a unidron, both covering the doorway his link team would emerge from and both in good range. I had hoped that I placed them such that they could both get AROs on anything that came out, but it seems I was an inch off. He was consequently able to kill the unidron easily, and then he won the 50/50 ftf against the ML. That face-off basically determined the match. He piled out of the bunker and set up a guard line long the balcony.

My second turn I spent a lot of orders on the HMG killing his link team, including the doctor, and pressing a button or two. I finished with the HMG covering the window I knew De Ferzen would emerge out of. This was a mistake. I should have kept the HMG safe and just let him make his run. Then I would have had an actual attack piece on turn 3 rather than just a bunch of shotguns. His turn his ML magister went impetuous and ran into the midfield guarding all the buttons. Meanwhile, De Ferzen took all the orders and made a dash into my territory to secure a line of buttons, killing my HMG and a unidron on the way.

Third turn I made a mistake. The main thing to do in tic-tac-toe is to look for the big swing, which in my case would have been pressing the last button De Ferzen got to. Instead, I stuck to my original plan of pushing my Rodoks up a flank. I had 8 orders and my lt specialist order to get the job done, but his magister ML passed 6 saves against D14 with no cover and ruined my day. With rolls like that I don't think it would have made a difference, but I should have gone towards De Ferzen with the Rodoks, potentially jumping on the building to avoid ML fire, and just pressed his button. This would have resulted in a 1 point win for me I think, and may have been safe because I could have just fallen onto the button with super jump and pressed it while eating ARO fire. Oh well.

Round 4 - Engineering Deck against Yu Jing 10-2

Very dense table for this one, which ended up helping me even though it prevented my noctifer from doing much.

He was running the Red Veil box plus some other stuff. Something like this:

 Engineering Deck
──────────────────────────────────────────────────
CELESTIAL GUARD (Kuang Shi Control Device) Combi Rifle + Light Smoke Grenade Launcher / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 13)
ZHANSHI Paramedic (MediKit) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13)
GŬILÁNG (Forward Observer, Deployable Repeater) Combi Rifle, Antipersonnel Mines / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 27)
NINJA Hacker (Killer Hacking Device) Tactical Bow / Pistol, DA CCW, Knife. (0 | 29)
HAC TAO Hacker (Assault Hacking Device) MULTI Rifle, Nanopulser / Pistol, DA CCW. (0.5 | 70)
HSIEN Lieutenant HMG, Nanopulser / Pistol, AP CCW. (2 | 61)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────

He won the roll and elected to go first if I remember correctly. Either way I got to deploy second, but like I said, there weren't many fire lanes for juicy sniper action, especially with the infinite height engineering deck in the middle. I plopped my Q-drone in a tower covering one side of the board with a slave drone for repairs. My Rodoks were behind some crates they could jump over with the ML peaking out to cover that flank and the Noctifer hidden on another container behind him with a direct line to the Zuyong.

His first turn he had to spend a lot of orders to launch smoke. Then his Hsien marched forward and killed my Q-drone but didn't dead  it. He then pressed a button. Having taken 2 orders from his pool he didn't have any left.

I knew his Hsien was the lieutenant, and I knew he had a Hac Tac hidden somewhere, but I couldn't tell if it had executive order. I wanted to kill the Hsien, because I figured another lame turn for him would mean the game for me. I consequently moved the Rodok team out of sight, triggering no AROs. I then put assisted fire on a unidron and went Hsien hunting. He survived my initial salvos and then retreated behind a crate. I went after him and got a wound, but the Hac Tao popped out and froze me. It was a hacker, which meant it didn't have executive order. I pushed the Maakrep out for more Hsien hunting. As I got close a ninja jumped out of TO and shot me with its bow, but my shotgun and MSV2 won out, also killing the smoke launcher in the process with the template. I then approached the Hsien, exchanging a shot with the Hac Tao on the way, who went into TO. The damn Hsien had survived about 16 orders. I popped the noctifer out to kill the Zhuyong, and my Rodok HMG jumped up to pot-shot the Tiger Soldier who was hiding behind some crates. He had very few orders for his turn, so it ended up being pretty lame regardless. Turn 3 I did manage to kill the Hsien with my unidron, and I then kill everything else and pressed a lot of buttons with my Rodok team. He had Yuriko and the Hac Tao to prevent retreat. So I had a final turn to press the remaining buttons and score my classifieds. Big win in the end.

Round 5 - Frontline against Vanilla Aleph (Marut) 5-8

This was an extremely open table and we both had heaps of snipers:

This was the matchup I both wanted the most and was dreading the most. The guy is arguably the best player in his state, with a string of wins lately and lots of experience, and he was running a Marut list with TO camouflage snipers i.e. all the things I struggle with. Something like this:

 Frontline
──────────────────────────────────────────────────
 NETROD . (0 | 4)
 NETROD . (0 | 4)
 PROXY Mk.1 Engineer Combi Rifle, Nanopulser, D-Charges / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 10)
MARUT Lieutenant (Strategos L3) MULTI HMG, Heavy Flamethrower, Nanopulser / AP CCW. (3 | 120)
PROBOT (Minesweeper, Repeater) Electric Pulse. (0 | 8)
LAMEDH Rebot (Sniffer, Repeater) Electric Pulse. (0 | 8)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────

I elected to deploy first and he chose to go second. I was amazed at how well he managed to hide everything on the open board even though I had the high ground. I had the Rodok ML in a tower with a slave drone and the rest of the lads on the ground behind a container. I had the noctifer on the middle level of the other tower because the top floor was just out of the DZ. Almost everything else was behind a building wall looking to move forward late game.

My plan first turn was just to try and remove as many orders from his pool as possible. The closest thing I could may shoot was a camouflage marker half way up the table, so I sent the Maakrep out to get it. Halfway through his first order, a mk2 proxy sniper appears. He manages to dodge. My ML declares move - a Dasyus sniper appears and the shooting commences. I choose to shoot both rockets at the proxy, hoping for him to miss with the Dasyus (it's firing on 9s with 1 dice). Even if he hits, I figure I can survive 1 wound from the DA and fix my man with the slave drone. who is within 6. I kill the proxy in an orgy of impact template, but then get hit by the Dasyus and fail both my slaves. That was pretty much the match right there.

My Q-drone stalks out and manages to down the Das, but it costs him a bunch of orders. I retreat behind some crates. I have enough left for the Makrep to exchange fire with the Naga camo token and do a wound, but he goes into NWI and kills me on his turn.

He starts his turn by throwing smoke with the Myrmidon. My noctifer blows his brains out. The Marut then goes sideways from me and I miss with my missile. The Marut does little else, just getting into position to suppression the territory where my Rodoks are waiting to emerge. The proxy mk1 goes 50/50 with my Q-drone and wins, which is another game changing moment. This allows him to effectively shut down that side of the field with suppression fire. His Naga stalks forward to kill my noctifer. I manage to dodge the first salvo but my unidrons fail to kill the Naga despite hitting him with two plasma rounds. Here I think I made a mistake. I dodged into cover with the noctifer, but I should have dodged into total cover. I felt I needed the massed firepower to ensure the Naga died (every kill counts a lot against a TAG list), but in hindsight the noctifer could have gone prone behind some sandbags in a way that the unidrons could not, and this might have won me the game. Who knows though. In any case, his Naga then managed to kill the noctifer on his next salvo but died to my plasma.

Next turn my HMG shot the other naga, and then my unidrons tried to kill the mk1 in suppression to no avail. I then spent some orders maneuvering a unidron around to kill a baggage bot. His turn he didn't have a lot of orders and his Marut couldn't really threaten my dudes because he got into shotgun range so it was basically a lame turn, he just moved a sniffer bot into position. My turn I managed to get a unidron round the back into frontline and kill a netrod and something else. And my Unidron went to secure the midfield but couldn't go prone behind the sandbags. He promptly died to the Marut on my opponent's turn. He had frontline and the mid-section in consequence with an 8-point bot, and I had my frontline with the baggage bot - my opponent forgot unidrons have baggage! So I lost 8-5. I was pretty happy with the game though. I definitely made him sweat, and a different roll or two at the start and it would have been a very different game.

Round 6 - Nimbus Zone against Vanilla Ariadna

I quite liked this table. Only one side had high ground with a parapet, and there was lots of close quarters combat too:

My opponent was running a fairly conventional Ariadna list. I have no idea what the groupings were, but it had the following stuff:

 Nimbus Zone
──────────────────────────────────────────────────

I won the roll off and took first turn hoping to get three antennas and basically win right there. He chose the high ground. I put most of my chumps around the edges to prevent RDZ from making a clean landing. I deployed the Rodoks in a building thinking they could advance safely from there, my Noctifer in the tower without cover, and my Q-drone on a container without cover (I figured he would probably be shot by a spetznas anyway). He then superior infiltrated a chasseur to the edge of my DZ into the building and layed a mine. Oh dear.

Fiirst turn I popped the chasseur with a unidron and my doc managed to save both the wounds. I then popped the other mine with the Rodok team. I failed all three of my dodges despite need 12s or 14s, but then passed all my armour checks, including the big one on my nexus lieutenant. I spent most of the rest of the turn trying to blow up the third antenna with 5 missile shots and failed.

His turn he threw basically his whole army at my Q-drone and lost. His irmandinho died first, failing to smoke. His bike managed to smoke up. Then managed to arrive because I hadn't crept my Ikadron forward an extra couple of millimetres. He tried to kill my Q-drone and I had a brain fart and didn't reveal my noctifer. The Q-drone still managed to come out on top after 3 roll offs thanks to cover from the high ground. Next up, the Snetsnaz. I couldn't see him with my Noctifer, but the Q-drone fanged a crit. The tankhunter popped out last and was met by my noctifer, who missed, but it didn't matter because my Q-drone got anothher crit. So Salty. I basically had command of the table after that because the snipers could see everything and he didn't really have any attack pieces left. He did valiantly manage to disconnect 3 buttons though thanks to a long range bombardment from his Katyusha.

The rest of the game I moved the Rodok's around killing stuff without putting him into retreat and downloading data packs while the snipers prevented him from doing so. I had 2 guys on every button at the end of the game and secure HVT, which was enough to get the big win.

Wrap up

MOAB was a superb tournament very well organised and run. The TOs did all the placement of armoury rooms and buttons between rounds, which was great, and the tesdawrrain was a delight. Everyone was in good spirits as usual, and sportsmanship  was perfect all round. 10/10 would play again.
