Thoughts on beating the top factions in Infinity part 1: Qapu Khalki

Infinity is an extremely well balanced game but a couple of the factions stand out as being just that little bit better than everyone else: Steel Phalanx and Qapu Khalki on the link-team side, and Nomads and Ariadna on the vanilla side. The link team factions win by dominating face-to-face rolls thanks to great stat-lines, big link teams and MSV2 or ODD, while the vanilla factions get ahead with streamlined units and midfield domination consisting of mines, good snipers, lots of camouflage and some crazy koalas.

So what do you need to beat these guys?

Qapu Khalki

What they've got:
- 5-man MSV2, BS12 base Djanbazan link team with HMG, Sniper rifle, doctor-plus on WIP14 and some Hafzas hiding a lieutenant and packing shotguns. With the doctor and ARM3 they often get back up even if you win the face to face roll, because going unconscious (as if you're going to get more than 1 wound) drops them prone and behind cover where the doctor can reach them unmolested.
OR
- A 5-man Janissary link with 1 or 2 hafzas, a HMG and an Akbar doctor with WIP14 (plus sometimes a tinbot and missile launcher). These guys are super hard to put down with ARM4, W2 and the doctor. They don't have MSV2 so you can smoke shoot them, but sixth sense level 2 means they are still shooting back on BS16, and they dodge real good on PH14. There is often a tinbot in there too; effective WIP17 makes assault hacking an isolate difficult, even before fairy dust comes in, though usually QK only have assault hackers.
- An infiltrating, camouflaged assault hacker with d-charges and WIP 14 who scores all the things and shuts down your HI link team.
- Cheap as chips Yuan Yuans with chain rifles who drop onto your flanks and rear and give you headaches. Remember that they're impetuous so they turn up straight away - deploy well and you should be fine. Be wary of the Bashi Bazouk though - he is a similarly nasty AD dude and he isn't impetuous. Note that Yuan Yuan's also throw smoke, which means one that deploys on the table can team-up real nice nasty with the Djanbazan's.
-  A second 3-man link team of Sekbans with an HRL, doctor-plus packing WIP14 and a harris dude with a shotgun. These guys have 360 visors and ARM3, which makes them hard to sneak up on, and then of course the doctor heals them. B3 on the HRL can be devastating, especially with BS13.
- Either two baggage bots or more infiltrating camouflage dudes depending on the mission. Note that baggage bots switch mines, so they can be quite annoying as mines are one of the best ways to kill QK because shock prevents doctoring.

What they don't have:
- In specialist missions they will likely have a sensor-bot, but that will be their only way to handle mines. Their MIs are fairly squishy when hit with shock, so try to make it costly for them to approach objectives. The MI teams are also slow, and mines can compound this shortcoming. In kill missions, their Janissaries will walk through your mines all day and get healed by their doctor if they do manage to take a wound, so you'll want a different approach there, probably involving smoke shooting or a TAG (sepsitor so good against Janissaries). Note that link teams can shoot back at flat through smoke and ignore surprise shot, so a single intruder probably won't be enough.
- Antipersonnel mines; but note that their infiltrators all have boarding shotguns, so getting close to a marker is not advisable.
- Lots of orders. It's usually just over one group, and the teams are slow. If you can knock out one link team early you will be in a much better position.
- ODD or something similar: You can always hit QK, they just make the ftf even and there's not much you can do about that.

How to beat them:
- If you know which one is the Hafza then an impersonator can really wreck QK's day with an assassination (though note that Janissaries are religious). It's a bit hard to tell, but the ML Janissary is a good bet, as are the Djanbazan's that aren't the HMG, sniper or doctor.
- Eclipse grenades and albedo make you invisible to MSV2. This allows you to set up a 1 on 1 ftf roll. If you have a good support weapon, you should be able to get a 2 dice burst advantage and only be down 1 or 2 on BS. Just remember that if you don't put them to dead, they will get back up.
- The best units for this role are HIs without any equipment. You get the BS, the support weapon and enough ARM and W to take a hit if you get unlucky on that ftf, but you don't pay for things like MSV2 or ODD that don't help you in this matchup. The Guarda de Assaulto stands out because he is cheap, has ARM3 and W2, a spitfire and brings eclipse grenades on his bot (and a flamer for SP)
- Because Djanbazan's have a tendency to get back up, rather than use eclipse to try and kill them, it's often better to use Eclipse to cover fire lanes and get you into the midfield. QK is weaker in the middle because Djanbazan's have mostly long range support weapons. If a Hafza pops out with a spitfire then you know the other shotgun Djanbazan is the lieutenant. In the middle you can lay mines around them, hit them with chain rifles (they don't dodge so good) or spec. fire grenades at them. Getting an EM off on the link leader also becomes more likely.
- The Janissaries are a tougher ask but in some ways more straightforward because they're just good HIs. What makes them great is that the Hafza's make them cheap and so you can have a bunch of other stuff (like a Sekban link). As with all HI links teams, your best approach is to get an infiltrating assault hacker to isolate the link leader and break the link, then smoke shoot them to pieces with something like a Rui Shi. Another thing that works great but is open to very few factions is throwing smoke at them and then dicing them in melee. Mines don't work at all and templates are likely to get absorbed and then healed.
- What makes beating QK hard is that the factions with the stuff to beat the Djanbazan link (like Nomads, who can bring both eclipse and mines) often don't have what you need to beat the Janissary link (smoke shooting and assault hackers).
