Yu Jing listbuilding for CanCon 2017

Yu Jing was one of my first thoughts for Cancon 2017 because they have the units to hold buttons in Antenna Field. These units need to have some combination of the following, though preferably all of them:

- Specialist
- A MOD stack, preferably on the camouflage spectrum rather than the MSV spectrum
- A weapon that can go into suppression
- High Armour and multiple wounds

Yu Jing bring this in spades: Dao Fei hacker, Hac Tao hacker, guilangs and tiger soldiers notably, and then you also have the other HI specialists like the Shang Ji with combi and flamer, the Karakuri and the Shikami.

Yu Jing also have a lot of the other stuff I like in a list, like an MSV2 HMG-totting attack piece with 2W to shrug off that irritating critical (Hsien), smoke throwers and cheap cheerleaders that serve a function (Kuang Shi).

The area where Yu Jing struggle is board control. If you take Guilang minelayers then you can't take them as specialists, The Kanren with madtraps is quite expensive and isn't a specialist, and the snipers available to Yu Jing are either expensive and susceptible to smoke shooting (Hac Tao with missile launcher, Armand) or cheap but limited in effectiveness because of a lack of surprise (Bao) or a lack of MOD stacks on defence (the Raiden HRL).

I experimented with variations of the following list for Antenna field, which I think is the defining mission of Cancon. Note that your antenna field list is probably also your supplies list, so you need ways to defend turn 1 and prevent your opponent running off with all the boxes:

The raidens, Krakots and camo tokens can slow your opponent down on turn 1 in supplies without being redundant if you go first, and they're cheap enough that if they die it's not a big loss. The raiden's mines defend your drop zone from AD dickheads and superior infiltrators. You have the HI, camouflage and suppression specialists you need for Antenna Field in the Dao Fei hacker and guilangs, as well as the cheap backfield specialists to hold you home button in the Keisotsu. Those paramedics also get a bonus to open a box in supplies, which can come in handy. With two, they can also potentially heal the raidens. You have one outstanding attack piece to open a breach in the Hsien. He and the Dao Fei are amply supplied with orders by the Keisotsu, Kuang Shi and celestial guard, who also brings smoke. You've got the tools to take down link teams with the chain rifles of the Kuang Shi and Krakot (who have the impetuous and forward deployment to be in position), the Krakot's grenades on high PH, the assault hacking Dao Fei and the smoke shooting Hsien. Finally, you've got loads of chain rifles to push opposing skirmishers off buttons. All in all, I liked this list. The raidens almost always died but I was good at holding buttons and won antenna field games even when going first, which is very tough.

The problems arrive in the other missions: frontline, firefight and supremacy, where your inability to slow your opponent down can potentially be catastrophic. Here is my preferred list for these missions:

you've got plenty of good attack pieces capable of taking TAGs, HI and snipers - the Hsien and Rui Shi with smoke shooting, the Dao Fei with immobilise, isolate and AP ammo, and the Raiden with fire on weak, nearby troops (he's also just cheap and it's great when you get that lucky kill on an Aquila). The chain rifles give you a death wave for frontline against Ariadna camo-spam and the like, and Shinobu sometimes just wins a game on her own. With her added into the mix from supplies and Antenna Field, you've also got everything you need to take apart a link team no matter how buff it is. You've got orders, and those orders either have chain rifles or baggage.

Why this list loses is that a Steel Phalanx list or something similar can just push forward with their 11 orders (strategos or the Lieutenant order on a TAG), spending the first 4 to move-move towards your deployment zone, and then start smacking your hidden guys who aren't in suppression. It is nearly impossible to hide this many guys effectively. This list has nothing that is good on defence outside of suppression. The Raiden is a sniper but he is more about forcing your opponent to spend one extra order to reveal him before he dies in an 80-20 shoot-out. Occasionally you get to kill something in active with him, but it's rare.

If you've got first turn I think this list is great. The Hsien can kill ARO pieces with smoke shooting. Shinobu goes on a rampage. The Kuang Shi get into advantageous positions behind a smoke screen. And then you drop everyone into suppression. But if you don't have turn 1 it's possible to get your face wrecked, and those aren't the kind of odds I like at what is essentially the national championships.

I don't know how to rectify this. You could take some Kanren with madtraps, but they are expensive and weak on offence (ugh...combis). Guilang minelayers are good decoys for your Dao Fei but mines don't really hurt a burley HI or TAG coming to stomp your face, and they cost SWC that you don't really have. A Hac Tao with ML can be hard to uproot for many threats, but smoke shooting puts him down fast, especially if the map doesn't have sniper posts with a parapet to drop behind when you take a wound. Same goes for Armand. I might be overly paranoid here. There aren't many lists that can get to your DZ on turn 1 and have enough orders left to wreck havoc. But I think that there are enough of them to make this a bad choice.

So I decided that I could do better than Yu Jing.
