Some Bakunin playtesting

Strikezone Wotan is in full swing, but we've got a tournament coming up at the end of July (to coincide with the end of the campaign), so being the competitive schmuck that I am, I'm busy playtesting. I want to run Onyx, but my mate is probably going to be using those models, so I will likely be running Bakunin so my Nomads can finally get a run in a tournament. Below I discuss some lists:

The missions are as follows:
1. Show of Force
2. Tic-Tac-Toe
3. Highly Classified
4. Supremacy
5. Cold Sleep

First up is my list for highly classified and probably cold sleep, though the Riot Grrl list below can actually play everything except highly classified.

I had a lot of trouble crafting a list for highly classified in Bakunin, mostly because I hate all their REMs and the prowler is so expensive just for d-charges. Moderator links are also just poop because they have base BS of 10, and Riot grrls don't bring any role-playing specialists. I ran some experiments with elite, 10-order Moira lists, but too much can go wrong. You don't have the spare orders for morlocks, which means the ladies are very susceptible to mines and chain rifles when they venture out, which they eventually have to do to score some cards. The first couple of turns are great while your ODD snipers and sin-eater hold down the fort and your 5-man HMG butchers everyone (and the zeros lay mines if you have nothing better to do), but if your opponent sits tight you might have a lot of trouble. You can also just lose a few face-to-face rolls on the first turn (say to a HRMC) and it's game over.

Eventually, I settled on this, which I think is frankly shit-hot, but has some bad match-ups:

This is a weird list for me because it's a sectorial but I'm not running a 5-man link. The game plan is basically as follows:
1. Go first
2. Throw lots of smoke and eclipse with the impetuous units
3. The Moira HMG rolls out and booms any ARO pieces with her ODD and B5 (even link teams will die) - Djanbazans and especially Gao Raels are quite scary here as they have MSV2 for your ODD and shock so a lucky roll ends you, but the odds are highly in your favour and few QK players run Djanbazans in big teams. Against these units when they aren't in a 5-man link, send the TR bot out and kill-stuff+repair as necessary until everything is dead or prone.
4. Spend irregular orders to lay smoke on the objectives as necessary (it is often unnecessary because your specialists are under camouflage markers)
5. Move your infiltrators out using combined orders and claim the objectives/score classifieds.
6. Die and go into retreat. This will require you to take heaps of casualties on your second turn and leave everyone out in the open along ARO lanes on turn 3. Keep a few choice units, like the Uberfallcommando, behind in case your opponent is smart enough not to put you into retreat. However, you have to make sure that if he doesn't put you into retreat he then can't score the objectives very well because all your pieces are guarding them.

If you can't go first, which is likely because a lot of people want to go first in highly classified, then you're still pretty solid. The ODD, B2 snipers and the TR bot (and perhaps the flash pulse bot) provide a lot of defensive firepower (especially if you can get those Moiras into a tower of death), and if your opponent comes forward to get into a nice range-band they are then closer to your melee units next turn. The rest of the game-plan applies as normal - provide a smoke screen for your infiltrators, press buttons/score classifieds and then bail.

The flash pulse bot and TR bot are there in large part to give your clockmaker something to repair, and the clockmaker has a zondbot so they can roam forward under the smoke to do HVT: retroengineering and sabotage. The Daktari has a bot so that she can sit with the snipers while the bot roams forward to heal people and score classifieds.

My only thought for changing the list would be to drop one of the moderators to upgrade one of the Moira snipers to Kusanagi (probably as the lieutenant). This would give you an extra attack piece and an extra specialist, but make you a bit weaker on defence and even more reliant on the first turn (after which the HMG moira can function just fine as an attack piece). I will experiment, but nowadays I prefer having a lot of defense to a lot of offence. The Moira snipers are quite good offensively anyway.

Onto the other list, which is much more of a no-brainer:

 Supremacy, Show of force, Tic-tac-toe

Before I say another word, neither of these lists is ideal for tic-tac-toe because the Riot grrl link has only 3 specialists, 2 of which are squishy, and the moira list doesn't have a lot of staying power, so it is easy to break any line of buttons it sets up. Playtesting will reveal how I should proceed.

Riot grrls are one of the sickest link teams in the game because of the stupid frenzy discount. You effectively get Mobile Brigada for 10 points less per model, at no noticeable disadvantage because linking removes impetuous. The main weakness of grrls compared to Janissaries, the other stupidly discounted HI link in the game (because of Hafzas in that case) is that they don't have a HMG (nor do they have an Akhbar doctor - these two things make Janissaries better than riot grrls). This is why the Moira is in the list - I never leave home without a HMG. The other attack piece is the Uberfallcommando, which combos nicely with the grrls. When your opponent moves forward to get inside their range band, they come very close to the commando, who eats just about anything without much trouble. The grrl link is very defensive, focusing on the two immovable missile launchers. They are immune to smoke shooting because of SSlvl2, immune to templates because of hyperdynamics, immune to hacking because of WIP13 and the tinbot lvl2, handle mimetic and even TO camo killers pretty well thanks to MSV2, and can move out and do clean up sweeps late game as a 3-girl team quite effectively thanks to their stats, specialist and MULTI-rifle (I don't think the spitfire is worth 2 SWC).

The rest of the list is mostly there by necessity. The Daktari heals the grrls and has two bots so that she can roam forward if needed and spread out between the grrls and the HMG. The zero is there to score classifieds, press buttons in supremacy and prevent my opponent from grabbing too many quadrants while my girls are stationary. Incidentally, I think one of the hardest matchups for this list is a hide-and-seek list in supremacy because you don't have the orders or the infiltrators to uproot it.

You always want to go second with this list, especially in supremacy. The 2 MLs basically waste your opponent's entire first turn, especially if they creep forward to within your 24" sweet spot, and then potentially get back up after falling prone. You can then flood forward. Importantly, going second means that the 3 other grrls can often move once to be covering a quadrant or two on your side of the board, forcing the draw on quadrants at the end of turn 1, without you needing to be too worried that your missile launchers are now no longer linked because you've already blown up the main threats to the grrls. Just be very careful that you do win turn 2 and 3, otherwise you will miss the big win.
